Red Lake is not a place to understand from a photograph alone. Its power is vertical: a broad opening in the plateau, steep rust-coloured walls and water held far below the rim.
Europe’s deepest karst lake
UNESCO describes Red Lake as Europe’s deepest karst lake and says it formed from the collapse of a massive doline. Local tourism information describes the overall depression as more than 500 metres deep, with water occupying roughly half of that vertical profile.
Why “Red”?
The name comes from the reddish tones of the surrounding rock walls, not red water. The lake surface itself can appear very dark because of depth, shadow and the steep geometry of the depression.
A viewpoint, not a descent
Unlike Blue Lake, Red Lake is experienced primarily from above. Its steep walls are part of what makes the site extraordinary and also why visitors should respect barriers, paths and local safety signage.
