Blue Lake and Red Lake are close enough to visit together, but rushing them as two photo stops misses the best part: the relationship between the lakes, Topana, the old town and the wider Imotski landscape.
Start at Blue Lake
Begin on the town side, where viewpoints around Blue Lake immediately connect geology with Imotski’s streets and fortress. Water level changes through the year, so access toward the basin should always follow current local signage and conditions.
Continue to Red Lake
Red Lake lies roughly 1.5 kilometres away according to Visit Imota. The experience is primarily from viewpoints at the rim. Do not treat the cliffs as an informal hiking area; steep karst terrain demands caution.
Take in the full basin before descending anywhere.
Move from geology into history without getting back in the car.
Finish with scale and depth rather than another walk.
