The water is only
half the story.
Blue Lake is a vast karst depression at the edge of Imotski. Its water level changes through the year — sometimes dramatically — so the same viewpoint can reveal a full lake, a receding shoreline or, in exceptionally dry periods, an exposed lakebed.
Why it is blue
The lake takes its name from the colour of its water, which Visit Imota describes as shifting from blue-green to turquoise depending on water level and weather. Light, depth, rock and suspended material all alter the way the basin is perceived.
A seasonal landscape
Official local tourism information reports a maximum length around 800 metres and notes that the lake can dry out in summer or early autumn. When the water is present, a historic serpentine route descends into the basin. When water retreats, the scale of the limestone amphitheatre becomes even more visible.
Blue Lake and Imotski
The lake is not isolated from the town. Topana Fortress and the old centre stand directly above it, making the visitor experience unusually layered: geology below, settlement on the rim, history above the cliffs.
